Mama Yoga and the Story of Namaste - a book review

Advice from a Tree  ~~ anon
stand tall and proud
go out on a limb
remember your roots
drink plenty of water
be content with your natural beauty
enjoy the view
And I’d like to add…
bask in the sun
don’t mind the clouds
provide shelter for birds, squirrels, and other creatures
go with the winds that are blowing through your life
climb a tree once in a while

Ages:  5-9

About the book:

Mama Yoga and the Story of Namaste is a beautifully coloured children's picture book that will get your kids not only digesting the text but getting up and participating in the yoga moves.  This book is a wonderful guide to yoga that shows your kids different poses but also gives written descriptions for each one of them.

The book invites the readers to kick off their shoes and strike poses which will bring them peace, happiness and well-being.

Mama Yoga, (sometimes called Mama Yoda or Mama Yogurt) guides them through a movement adventure across the continents to find the true meaning of Namaste.  As the kids settle down and calm themselves they are able to find tranquility and go deeper into the mysteries of their inner selves.  Through stillness and concentration they learn to make positive choices and in so doing build up their own self-confidence and self-esteem.

The kids learn to interact with kindness and acceptance towards each other and discover that not only their bodies but their minds and spirits are nurtured too.

I liked the whole vibe of the book and recognized right away that the blending of the illustrations plus actual photos of kids doing yoga was a winning combination.  The yoga poses are easy to emulate and who doesn't want their child to have harmony within themselves and with their world?  The message is positive and an excellent way to show kids that with benevolence and respect to those around them our world can be a much better place to live.

About the author:

I was raised in Houston, and that Texan comes out in me with my smile and friendliness. After living in Illinois, Taiwan, California, and Colorado, I've settled down in the Seattle area of the beautiful Pacific Northwest.  This is a wonderful place be a kid!  There's so much to do outside (hiking, paddleboarding, swimming, skiing, kayaking) and people are very accepting here.  This is where I really got into yoga.  Before I became a certified yoga teacher for children (through Yoga Kids International, Yoga Ed, and Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga) I was an elementary school teacher.

I'm a parent to two awesome boys (Liam and Declan) and wife to my sweetie, Bill. We share two dogs and a bearded dragon.

I love reading, storytelling, hanging out with kids, and doing yoga.  I knew the time was right to put all of my passions together. I introduce to you my first book, Mama Yoga and the Story of Namaste. Please let me know how you enjoy it! I have many more yoga stories to write!

Alex Langenstein grew up on the Oregon coast, went to animation college in Vancouver BC, Canada, and now lives in Seattle with her partner, Sean, and their weird cat, Samson.   When she's not working as an illustrator or animator, Alex loves to ride bikes, go to the park, play WiiFit, and bake cupcakes.
